Review by Luke’s SPEAR Case Worker – Louis
Luke entered our services as a shy, timid, and reserved young man, who at a young age has endured struggles many of us can only imagine. But he hasn’t been limited by his experiences, but used them to challenge the norm.
Luke used his passion for art, graphic design, and film to help make his contribution towards influencing social change.
Cut Films is a charity dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of smoking through a series of anti-smoking projects and workshops. Every year they hold one of the UK’s largest youth film competitions. Luke entered the competition and worked closely with our skills development team and Cut films to produce an incredibly powerful and hard hitting short animated film about the tobacco industry. All of a sudden his shyness faded and a burst of innovation and creativity followed.
He was nominated for both the local and national award ceremonies. We were all overwhelmed, but not surprised when he came first for the judge’s choice in the regional awards, and took home the award for best film in the 19 to 25 category at the nationals.
Following on from this success, he has decided to pursue a career within the film industry. He is currently enrolled on a photoshop, Indesign and Illustrating course at Richmond Adult Community College and recently started editing and production courses. He moved into his own flat in August and is managing well.
‘Luke is ambitious, highly motivated, driven and someone that I consider a very successful story.’
As a staff team, we see the potential in every single individual we work with. But sometimes the individual is unable to see the potential within themselves. Luke has gone above and beyond to prove that you are only as limited as your own fears, determination, and self-belief. He has been an inspiration to all of us, but especially those facing hardships themselves.
Luke I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for you.
