Real stories

Read some of the stories of people who have experienced homelessness and been supported through our services.

Steve’s story

When SPEAR’s outreach team first met Steve, 46, he was sleeping rough in Richmond. Though he tried to stay positive, years of instability, health issues and burnout had taken their toll.
SPEAR client Nuno sitting on the edge of Twickenham Green in London, Nuno experienced various forms of homelessness: rough sleeping on the streets of Richmond, sofa surfing, living in squat before being supported by SPEAR.

Nuno’s story

Nuno, 45, had a wealth of experience in hospitality and warehouse logistics and was working at Heathrow airport in 2020 when lockdown hit. With most air traffic suspended, Nuno’s job vanished overnight plunging him into homelessness.

Shane’s story

Shane, 60, has a background in market trading and the creative industries, but found himself facing homelessness when irregular work meant he fell behind on his rent and was evicted from his housing association home.
