Billy’s story - a father’s determination to build a better future
When Billy was first supported into housing by SPEAR in November 2024, he had spent around seven years living in his car. Despite the hardship, he remained hopeful for change and was determined to rebuild his life – not only for himself but for his children.
Billy moved into one of SPEAR’s shared houses and quickly became known to staff as a positive role model. His steady progress and commitment stood out from the start.
Family is at the heart of everything Billy does. He is a devoted father to several children, including his youngest son, Roco, who is six years old and autistic and non-verbal. Billy describes a strong bond with Roco, saying that he understands his son’s needs deeply and is proud to be his main carer. Billy’s motivation to make lasting changes came from wanting to be fully present and supportive for all his children.
During his time in the shared house, Billy disclosed his past reliance on cannabis, which he had used to help him sleep. He asked for support and SPEAR helped him connect with local drug and alcohol services. Through consistent attendance and determination, Billy completed his treatment programme, receiving a certificate to mark his success – and proudly sharing that he no longer uses substances.
After around ten months in SPEAR’s accommodation, staff recognised that Billy was ready to move on. Confident in his ability to manage independently, they supported his housing application to the local authority. Shortly after, Billy was offered a one-bedroom flat through a housing association – a milestone he celebrated with immense joy.
“Billy’s reaction when he got the news said it all,” recalls his support worker. “He accepted the offer before even seeing the place - he was that happy to finally have a home of his own.”
Billy credits his progress to the support he received from SPEAR and the encouragement of his eldest son, who has stood by him throughout his journey. Together, father and son have taken on a new challenge – a health and fitness journey that’s seen them both lose significant weight and regain energy.
In December 2025, Billy moved into his new home, just in time for Christmas. For the first time in years, he celebrated the holidays in his own home, surrounded by his family.
